How to Reduce Overreaction Through Play

How to Reduce Overreaction Through Play

Structured play is one of the most effective tools for reducing overreaction in sensitive dogs. Here's how to use it deliberately to lower the threshold that makes small things trigger big responses.

Why Play Reduces Overreaction

The right kind of play lowers baseline arousal — the underlying activation level that determines how close a dog is to their overreaction threshold. Lower the baseline and the threshold rises. Small triggers that previously caused overreaction stop producing a response because the nervous system has more capacity before it tips over.

The Overreaction-Reducing Play Protocol

Step 1: Pre-Play Calm (10 Minutes)

Before any active play, give the Snuffle Ball Foraging Toy for 10 minutes. Nose work lowers baseline arousal to the optimal level. Starting play from a calm state prevents the escalation that keeps the threshold low.

Step 2: Low-Intensity Structured Play (10-15 Minutes)

For sensitive dogs, keep play intensity moderate. Avoid high-arousal games like frantic fetch or rough tug. Structured, calm play — with clear rules and frequent pauses — provides engagement without raising the arousal baseline further.

Step 3: The Licking Bridge (15-20 Minutes)

Immediately after play, give the Yipetor Frozen Treat Dispensing Toy. The licking activates the parasympathetic nervous system and brings post-play arousal down below the pre-play baseline. This is the most important step — it produces the net reduction in baseline arousal that raises the overreaction threshold over time.

Step 4: Daily Consistency

One session lowers the baseline temporarily. Daily sessions lower it cumulatively. Within 2-3 weeks of consistent daily play using this protocol, most sensitive dogs show measurable reduction in overreaction frequency and intensity.

Supporting the Process

The Petscy Natural Calming Chews given daily provide additional natural support for the baseline reduction process. The ThunderShirt Anxiety Relief Vest worn during known high-trigger periods helps maintain the lower baseline between play sessions.
